Making Internal HDD Removable?

Is it possible to make an internal hard drive "hot-swappable" in Windows XP
SP2? I've got a removable mobile media hard drive tray that says it is hot
swappable with Windows 9X, but it says it isn't with XP and I don't
understand why it can't be...

This has nothing to do with the manufacturer of the device, but rather the
fact that Windows XP does not support hot-swapping an IDE device. There are
ways around this limitation (third-party software), but I have found them
unreliable at best. Generally, they "disable" the IDE drive, allow you to
"swap" it and then allow Windows to pick up that a new device is in place
all enable it. The theory is sound, but the risk is that you could damage
your HD or corrupt the data if they do not perform properly.

Hot Swapping can be dangerous with any O/S but with XP it is probably due to
the monitoring and saving of the System Restore feature. You can turn it off
for each additional drive but if you want to swap frequently, better to risk
turning it off for all drives and rely on disk images for restoration.
(Flick Symantric - USE ACRONIS). It is always better to COLD swap. I am not
sure if System Restore is the only reason why XP has this problem - seeking
advice?
