Hi,

You know how when you go to, say, the control panel for the first time or
c:\windows in explorer for the first time it says a message like, "The
contents here are private. If you really want to go ahead click". Is there
a way to do that for any folder? Thanks!

From XP HELP:

To make your folders private
1 Open My Computer.
2 Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:),
unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the
contents of this drive.

3 Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
4 Double-click your user folder.
5 Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
6 On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I
have access to it check box.

Notes
• To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
• This option is only available for folders included in your user profile.
Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders,
Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these
folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.
• When you make a folder private, all of its subfolders are private as well.
For example, when you make My Documents private, you also make My Music and
My Pictures private. When you share a folder, you also share all of its
subfolders unless you make them private.
• You cannot make your folders private if your drive is not formatted as
NTFS.

Hi Wes,

Thank you for your prompt reply! Perhaps I phrased my question poorly.

When I run windows for the first time when I go to the control panel or
explore to the windows folder there is a message that says that the contents
are hidden and if I *really* want to see them to click. I did that a long
time ago.

Now I'm wondering if there is a way to get that message to come up on a
folder of my own. Is the way to do that with making folders private? Or by
making them hidden?

Thanks!

To open Help and Support, Click Start and then click Help and Support.

From XP HELP:
To hide a file or folder
Open My Documents.
If the file or folder you want to hide is not located in My Documents or its
subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, point to
Search, and then click For Files or Folders.

Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, select the Hidden check box.

Notes
To open My Documents, double-click the My Documents icon on your desktop.
To view hidden files, on the Tools menu in any folder window, click Folder
Options. On the View tab, under Advanced settings, select Show hidden files
and folders.

Who are you trying to hide/protect them from? Other users, or accidental
things you might do?
