a set of instructions asks that i make a bootable floppy disk,
(for a firmware update to my cd r/ dvd rom)

i guess disk is to be presumably blank?,

as instructions then asks that i insert unzipped files,
how does one make a bootable floppy?

(see instructions from firmware developer):

"Instructions:
1. Make Bootable Floppy Disk
2. Extract all files of the ZIP file onto Boot Disk
3. Reboot PC with Boot Disk inserted.
4. Type
update.bat <return>
F/W will now be updated (you may be prompted to insert a disk, any CD
will do)
5. Wait for Flashing to finish.
6. Reboot PC"

XXXXXXXXXX.

please advise with the more detailed instructions the better as i am a
newby.

thank you
robert

Visit www.bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98
boot disk.

oops:

went to site.

i have windows xp home sp 2.

do i still download a windows 98 boot disk?

sorry for asking a silly question,

robert

followed instructions,
on boot.com

and clicked on 'boot disk' for windows 98 OEM.

entered save to floppy in drive A.

something happened...
sounded like it was done,

(on disk was a file called:
"boot98.exe")

added unzipped files per flash instructions

rebooted with floppy in 'a' drive, and message came up;

something like 'can not read disk',
'insert system disk'

or 'hit any key'...

took out disk and hit a key and boot took place but not via
new boot disk.

any suggestions?

being a newby it must be me.

please advise,

thanks in advance
robert

Do not save the downloaded file to a floppy....that is your problem.

1. Right-click on your Desktop and select New > Folder.
2. Rename the new folder "Bootdisk Download".
3. Visit www.bootdisk.com and download the Win 98 bootdisk file
to the "Bootdisk Download" folder you just created.
4. Once the file is downloaded, double-click on the "boot98.exe" file
and you'll be prompted to insert a blank floppy disk in your floppy
drive, then the files will be extracted to the floppy disk.
5. Afterward, your bootdisk is created and you then copy the firmware
files to that floppy disk.

Carey,
Wouldn't have been easier to have the OP create an "MS-DOS" bootable
floppy using WinXP's format command in explorer? You took the OP from New
York to London via Singapore?

To create a MS-DOS startup disk using Windows XP:

1. Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy drive.
2. Open My Computer, and then click the floppy disk drive to select it.
3. On the File menu, point to the name of the floppy drive, and then click Format.
4. Under Format options, click Create an MS-DOS startup disk.
5. Click Start.
6. Everyone happy now?

| "Dom, give me turbos"

though instructions were clear something seemed too complicated.

so i made the bootable disk in the format mode.

added unzipped files.
rebooted,
did as instructed,
and the new firmware worked, and all is well.

i subsequently created a new clean bootable disk

the bootdisk.com way

and will keep that for security purposes 'just in case', as the saying goes.

then i reformatted the earlier boot disk (from format mode) with new
firmware...

so the only real disk i now have is the one from bootdisk.com
with new firmware et al.

thanks to all for your input.
