I recently purchased Word 2007 and learned that I had to check a box in the
save as screen to enable the file to be opened and readable by Word 2003
receipients.
Do I have to check this box everytime I save a file and want my Word 2003
receipients open it OR is there a default where as every file is saved as doc?

Actually you can make word save documents in the 97-2003 file format all you
need to do is to go to the Word Options under the Office Button.

In Word Options go to "Save" then change the "Save files in this format:"
option to Word 97-2003 Format.

If you have other computers that still have 2003 Microsoft Office or earlier
(2002, 2000), you can actually you can install the Microsoft Office
Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. You can
download it from here:
