Could anyone tell me how I could make Outlook open with the newsreader be
default?

Thank you.

Outlook is not a newsreader.
Do you mean Outlook Express?
You can add the "outnews" or "newsonly" switch to the command line
on any shortcut to OE (msimn.exe) to open OE in newsreader only mode.

In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK:
"drive:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe" /option

Yes, Outlook Express.

Thanks

Sorry, but now I'm confused. I AM using Outlook 2003. I followed some
instructions from this ng to add "news" to my toolbar. So now when I open it
I get the email client, then click on the news icon to go to the newsreader.
I also have Express, on which I did as you suggested and it worked, but I
don't use Express.

Thanks

And that newsreader is Outlook Express. The News item in Outlook calls
Outlook Express, or whatever newsreader you have defined in the "Newsgroups"
field of Internet Explorer's Tools>Internet Options>Programs.

Thanks. Now I remember that although I didn't do it that way, I was able to
add the newsreader to the Outlook Toolbar. I guess all I really need to do
is add a shortcut to the desktop for the reader.
Sorry, I've never been happy with the MS mail clients so I use Thunderbird.
