here is my problem
I upgraded to office ultimate from xp running on a windows.

i unistalled office xp first.

the problem now is that if I want to open a document that was created before
the upgrade, I can just go to the documents folder or whatever and open it. I
does not give ms word as an option of the program to open the document.

the only way to do it is to open word, go to open file and then wade through
until you get to where the document i am trying to open is stored.

I'm thinking there's gotta be a way to just go to the document I want to
open and open it without going through all this. Am I right?
If so how?

thanks

First see how to re-register Word when problems crop up opening files
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm and if that doesn't
fix it select a document in Windows Explorer, right click and choose Open
with...

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to
always open with this application.

I was having trouble finding ms word in the "open with the following program"
window, so I created a shortcut on the desktop so I could find it easily.

Then I clicked on of the documents I was talking about and a window came up
for me to choose a program, or you could look at the bottom of that window
and said "browse". I browsed and choose MS word under "desktop". then there
is a box at the bottom of the window that popped up where you can check off
"always use this program for this type of document". I did that, and so far
so good!

I tried to be specific, hopefully it makes some sence.
