Hello,

I have a Windows XP Gold Reloaded (has SP2) on it. I am putting in on
a new system. However it does not autoboott from the CD player - the
bios is set to auto boot from the CD ROM.

I checked the CD on another computer - there is an autorun.inf - should
that not make it boot?

Otherwise I have to make the 4 boot disks and try it that way, or
exchange it at the place I got it from.

Suggestions - or 4 disk/return?

Thanks,

Tmuld.

AUTORUN.INF is not *really* for booting - but auto-running in a Windows
Environment.
Does it boot on the other computer?
This is a retail/original Windows XP CD?

No it did not boot up on the other computer - but the name appeared -
on double clicking it it opened up like it was about to run.

I think auto run is enabled on both computers because my old windows
2000 CD will come up.

It is legit, going back to the store is just such a pain. Guess I have
to use boot disks? But will windows 2000 boot disks work?

Hey - thanks!

If it did not boot (having the BIOS set to boot from CD first - powering
off/on, pressing any key when it asks..) from the CD on either machine -
then either the CD is not legitimate (a bad burn) or is just bad.. (or there
is a slim chance your drives in both machines are trashed. hah)

AutoRUN does not matter.. Again - booting from a CD is not dependent on
this. AutoRUN is an "I'm in Windows - look - I inserted a CD and this file
(autorun.inf) told me to do this and display this icon." thing - not a "I
set my machines BIOS to boot from the CD first, put in my bootable Windows
XP original CD, rebooted and watched for the 'Press any key to boot from
CD..' message." thing.

You can try using the boot diskettes - but you would be better off figuring
out what is wrong.

You never answered if this was an Original Windows XP CD. Stamped, not
burned. You say you got it from a store - but that doesn;t necessarily mean
much. heh What store?

I would call the store - tell them that the CD will not boot in either of
your computers and see what remedies they present you with. They should
exchange it happily. You can also just chjeck for scratches and such..

You need to press a key to bootup from CD. There is normally a message
on the screen but many people miss it. You need to look at the screen
for few minutes to take the appropriate action.

No. autorun is not for booting, but for autostarting a cd when you put
it in the drive while win is running.

No. That's just to start the CD from a Windows environment.

If it actually has Windows XP on it, boot to a floppy that had CD support, work your way to the
CD's i386 folder, and run "winnt.exe"

If you need a bootable floppy, this will create one for you. Have a formatted floppy handy, then
run the program. http://www.digitalforrest.com/peruggia/myfiles/Win98Boot-CD&Delpart.zip
Scan it with your AV first, or open it with WinImage, to see that it just contains a bootable
floppy image.

The two files that make the CD boot are not visible in windows explorer.
The MS CD boot method, you should not see "press any key to boot from CD",
it will just boot from CD.
You have to set priority, boot from CD before any other device in the bios
setup.

Do you have your BIOS set up to boot first from the CD? If not, it will
always boot from the hard drive (if that is selected).
