major problems

Last night my pc running xp started behaving very oddly, first I couldn't
and still can't access any websites at all but can send and receive email
and newsgroup messages.

when I look at the status of my broadband connection I can see data being
sent and received but I've no idea where to or from.

my antivirus will not scan cannot be uninstalled or re-installed as with my
internet security which has been disabled.

tried both options in safe mode but no joy. I haven't installed anything new
recently so have no idea what is causing all of these problems.

when I disconnected from the web last night the pc asked if I wanted to
reconnect to badazz or a coupe of other sites, no idea what these are at all
as I can't view anything what so ever.
I've tried uninstalling xp back to me but that's not happening either, done
restore as far back as 27th may to no avail.
any ideas please.

here is a link to SpyBot Search & Destroy. Download and install this program, then open, read the info, then run SB S&D..it sounds like you have either a virus, or a spyware/malware/or highJacker..one thing about doing a System Restore, is that if you did have any kind of worm,virus, etc
.., but did not get Every Single Part of it removed, a Restore will bring it all back.

Of course, I wasn't thinking when I posted that you can't access the internet. Try emailing this post to yourself, then see if you can download it from there.

i can't access any websites so can't download anything. i have got ad-aware
on board but that hasn't found anything.

in the 24 minutes that I have been online my computer has sent 12,500,000
bytes and received 5,500,000 bytes without me being able to connect to a
single web page

Your computer is well and truely infected

Since you can't get to a web page and your antivirus won't run, the
only way *I* see to fix this is a boot disk and the FORMAT command
(or, boot off the XP CD and do the same thing)

Once you have a clean hard drive and reinstall everything, steps you
need to take BEFORE you connect to the Internet again

1-install and use a firewall
2-install and use an antivirus

Did all of this internet hijacking occur while your computer was connected
to a firewall ? Jym
