major install problems

Ok so heres the start of my problem. I bought a new oem copy of xp pro. I did
a format to remove xp home. That went fine. Then when the copying of files
begins all of these and sometimes some other files cannot be copied.
Xptht12D.jpg, 15, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38,
40,41, 42, xptht52D.gif, xptht61D.jpg, 66, 72, 76, 80, xptht02W.jpg, 3w, 8w.
rasdlg.dll, zipfldr.dll, xpsp1res.dll, xpsp2res.dll, xptht19w.htm,
xptht39w.htm, msadds32.ax

After the reboot the installation begins. I just realized that when the
Regional and language options window appears all I can do is adjust the
currency and etc options. And then the install continues, it now cant copy
zoneclim.dl_, ZCorem.dll. So I just copied the files from my other computer.
The install completes and reboots. at the select user name screen. All I can
choose is Administrator. It prompts me for a password, so I leave it blank. A
cannot log on yadda yadda. I ctr+alt+del and all that changes is the option
to shut down, that’s it.

Now ive just completed another clean install all the files above could not
be copied, plus a few others, but I was able to set a admin password and work
group this time…..So now I got to log in, but Internet explorer icon on the
start menu is not there, I click on the icon and the Open with window opens
with only notepad, paint, windows picture, wordpad available. Not that big of
a deal. I went to open the control panel to install drivers under the system
properties, but the only tabs on the top is General, Computer Name, Advanced
that’s it! Also the first four icons in the control panel have no name. one
is a folder and the others are a generic icon with no purpose. The add
hardware wizard dosent seem to work either, it just freezes. Add or remove
programs wizard just dosent work. On another note I plugged my usb thumb
drive in and it dosent work either.

Thru all my research ive read that xp is rather picky on the memory used?
Right now I have 196mb installed, ive ordered 512mb to max out my ram. I have
a Dell Inspiron 8100 P3 1.13hmz. Im hoping its just the ram and not the disc
itself.

Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas to fix all of this? Or did I just buy
a holographic coaster?!

p.s. sorry for the rambling, im a little frustrated

OEM copys are limited on use compared to retail copys of xp,why not boot
to xp pro cd (with home installed),then at info screen, install xp,new copy,
delete the partition, create one, then pro installs automatically...

Thats how I did it the first time, i misspoke when i said format. I'd like
to install xp home again just to put an end to this but the original cd is
broken.

I saw some other posts were the cd drive was the problem. Ive tried hooking
up an external cd drive via 1394 but i cant figure out how to get it to boot
from there, if its even possible. I was thinking about attaching the hdd to
my desktop with an adapter and using that cd rom drive then just swapping it
back into my laptop.

Have you tried booting from the XP CD? You didn't clarify this.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

I did a clean install step by step with the link you provided. The only
difference is around step 27, the windows xp pro splash screen it just shows
windows xp. then it goes straight to the logon page no activate, create
profiles, etc. and once i log in thats about all i can do.

btw i do appreciate the help so far, thanks!!
