maint. programs will not run

when i try to run the disk defragmenter the window will
open up the close right away. When I try to restore, it
goes trhough the process but when pc starts back up it
tells me computer can not be restored. When i run the
disk clen (can for recover any damage) it doesn't do
anything. Could any one tell me what these problems could
be caused by, and how to fix them. thank you

Try running these with most other programs closed or

exited out, or run from in the safe mode. Also running
the system file checker tool may help, click the start,
run, and type in this; sfc /scannow with that space.
