Main Dialogue error

Hi Everyone. I'm a new person in the world of computers having just gotten
this one Christmas - I get one error message that occurs while I boot up the
computer. It reads " An error occurred while creating the main dialogue.
Please reinstall the program" Do any of you computer wizards out there know
what this means? Is it a windows error message? I have windows XP. And the
icon next to the error message is a shield type icon in yellow with an
exclamation mark. If I put in the windows disk, is there an option whereby I
can just repair it without it deleting anything? I have a lot of other
programs I don't want to lose.

Hi Susan,

Let's see if we can isolate it. Click start/run, type msconfig and click ok.
Go to the services tab, scroll down and locate "security center". Uncheck
it, click apply/ok and reboot. Does the error still occur?

Hi Rick. I followed your instruction but when I went to the services tab
under msconfig I couldn't locate anything that said "security center" only
"security accts. mgr." - is this the same? Anyway, it didn't work. I still
got the main dialogue error. I appreciate your help.

Hi Susan,

No, that wasn't the same one. The Security Center is added as part of
Service Pack2 and would be near the bottom of the list. Let's do this
instead:

In msconfig, go to the general tab. Go to selective startup, uncheck the
line to "Load Startup Items", click apply/ok and reboot. See if this
resolves it. If it does not, go back and disable the line to "Load System
Services" and repeat. Post back once you know which group is causing it.

Good morning Rick. I tried selective start and unchecked the line to "Load
Startup Items". I worked!! I didn't get the main dialogue error. I got a
box that said for me to check normal but when it asked that if I didn't want
that box to appear each time to deselect it. I did. One question - what
happened? Is it OK to run the computer under selective startup?

Hi Susan,

Sure it's ok to run this way, but we still want to figure out what is
causing it. Re-enable the startup group, then go to the startup tab and
disable half the entries listed (doesn't matter which half or which ones).
Click apply/ok and reboot. If it doesn't occur, then the problem is with one
of the lines you disabled - here you want to reenable half and reboot. If it
does, then it lies with one of the ones you did not, so you want to disable
half of the remaining entries and reboot. Use this pattern to isolate the
one that actually is causing the problem and post back with that.
