I introduced to-day another of my friends to Mailwasher and the installation
went without any problems.

Only when he downloaded (or wanted to) messages the Sign-on window came up
with his Username and Password already in it. But then a notice:

"Authentication failed. Plaintext passwords not supported for this account"

He uses Verizon for his ISP, same as I, and I have never seen this message.

I went to mailwasher's FAQ and read all of them, but this is not explained.

What does it mean and what does he need to do?

Is your friend using AVG 7 for his anti-virus protection? If he is there is
a problem between AVG 7 and mailwasher that throws this error. Be sure he
has the latest edition of mailwasher. If so open the MailWasher program ->
Tools -> Accounts -> select the account -> Properties -> switch to Bouncing
and outgoing mail ->SMTP server address -> Advanced account options ->
Outgoing SMTP server -> enable My SMTP server requires authentication

Use verizon dsl here and a real old version of mailwasher - get lots of spam
from my domain which forwards through my verizon email, mailwasher sure
helps keep away Rolex and that kind of stuff. Hope none of my friends
offer me a free Rolex or any watches or suddenly get horny and email me. I
might miss out on something.

Might try opening mailwasher tools/accounts and delete his and then run
the accounts wizard which should then use all the account data from IE...
and I guess other email programs. then next time he checks mail it will
pop the login and ask for password with hopefully all the correct settings
pre-set and then just needs to fill in his password and press the go
button.

saw it in the grisoft FAQ. Although I can't find it again right now. I think
it said to disable email protection in Zonealarm too if you are using that.

Thanks for the detailed information. I shall check his when I am again in
Columbia, Md., soon.

He is NOT using ZA or AVG7.
Instead NOD32 and I have that too and never had such notification.
