mailed send under wrong account

Sometimes my mail gets stuck in the outbox. I go to outbox, open it, verify
it is being sent under the correct account, and send it. It always sends at
this point, but when I go under sent items it was sent under a completely
different account!!!

-Max

What version of Outlook do you have? What sort of accounts? Do you get any
error messages?

Outlook 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1

Actually I just noticed half my emails in the Sent Items folder were sent
under the WRONG account, and it's happening very frequently! There is no
error message. It's not limited to mail that gets stuck in my outbox (that's
a separate issue with my pop3 server and isp).

I have about 5 different email accounts in Outlook, using POP3 only. Some
accounts don't receive email, they are just aliases, only for sending. I use
a different account for friends, clients, and people I don't know.

Problem is now my clients are getting my personal email address, my friends
are getting my junk email address, and spammers are getting my REAL email
address! ARG!! Is this a joke??

-Max

Did you install Outlook 2003 fresh, or was it an upgrade from a previous
version of Outlook? We're currently trying to track down some cases in
which Outlook's account setup seems to be corrupted, and there seems to be a
correlation with upgrades. You might try creating a new profile (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918) and see if
that solves your problem. In a new profile, you can open your old message
stores to get your old messages through File -> Open -> Outlook Data File...

This was a fresh install of Outlook 2003. The datafile is an import from
2003 running on another computer. The datafile originally had an import from
the previous version though.

-Max

Do you know for sure whether the addresses on the messages that people
receive are wrong? It's possible that what's happening is that the proper
address is being used for sending but the wrong one is being written to the
message in Sent Items. Either way, it's obviously not supposed to happen,
but knowing exactly what's happening will help track down the problem.

It's actually sending under the wrong account -- people reply to them. It
appears to be completely random now that I look -- completely disregarding
the account I select. Some of my accounts do not have a valid SMTP server,
and coincidently sometimes mail does not leave the outbox. I've not had time
to try deleting accounts or starting with a new datafile...

-Max

I don't think a new datafile will do the trick - account information is
stored in the system's registry, not the datafile. Creating a new profile
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918) is the way
to get a clean slate of account information. Could you turn on diagnostic
logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment) after you've sent some
mail that goes out under the wrong account? Not that I'm expecting much
from the logfile, but there might be a clue in it...

Creating a new profile worked. A little cumbersome getting everything back
the way it was, but I didn't lose anything important by doing that. Sorry I
didn't turn the logging on before I fixed it. Thanks for your help!

Max

Do you happen to know if this only started happening after you applied SP-1?
At least one person I've heard about this problem from seems to think that
it was SP-1 that created the problem. We'd like to find out if this is
indeed the case.

The problem occurred about the same time I installed the last Windows XP
service pack. I really don't remember if I installed any updates to Office
during that time, but it is very likely I checked out and installed an
Office update during that time.

Could you try turning on authentication to your outgoing server (it's on the
"Outgoing server" tab of your account dialog)? There appears to be a bug in
the latest Office 2003 SP that causes Outlook to try using a different
account to send the mail if sending on the proper account failed with a
"Relaying denied" error, which you'd get if not authenticating. I've been
able to reproduce this on my machine, but haven't had the time to completely
track it down and fix it.

I'm having the same problem. My main account was throwing some errors
and Outlook failed over to the next one in the list.

The outlook log the below indicates seems to confirm this behaviour...
It tries the correct account and the server gives "Relaying denied"
error (not sure why)
Next it fails over to the next account in the list which fails with
"relaying denied" 'cos I can't use that account from my current
location.
the next account fails 'cos it has been shut down...

Is there any news on a fix for this problem?

Thanks
Keith

I've got a fix for this that's currently in testing. I'll see if I can get
the powers-that-be to release it as a hotfix once it makes it through the
proper channels.

You might want to check with the service provider of your first account -
it's odd that they're denying relaying but don't provide any mechanism for
you to authenticate. Possibilities are that you need to log into your POP
server before sending, or that you need to be sending through a different
server that *does* support authentication.

I'm having this same problem. Is there any fix yet?

No, but you can probably fix it by authenticating to your outgoing server
(on the "Outgoing server" tab for your account). The problem is that
Outlook is unable to send on your default account.

Jeff:

I had the same problem with mail being sent from wrong accounts in Outlook
2003. I had a fresh install on a new hard drive and Service Pack 2.
Checking the authentication box you mentioned seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks!
Sheri

I've been having the same problem. 5 IMAP accounts, only one of them
has a problem--when I reply to any messages (or start new ones) from
that account, it always ends up sending from my default mail account (a
different account). Outgoing authentication was enabled, but the
problem still occurred. However, once I enabled SSL on the SMTP server
[Account->More Settings->Advanced->This server requires an encrypted
connection SSL] (it's a university account, so luckily this is
supported), the problem was resolved.

The IMAP logs did not turn up anything interesting.

I had this problem with 5 IMAP acocunts also. Turning on authentication for
the outgoing server, as suggested by Jeff, seems to have solved the problem
in Outlook 2003. Thanks!
