Mail status in the Windows XP welcome screen?

I had read somewhere that Windows XP could display a icon or something next
to each name in the Welcome screen when mail arrives for that user. Is that
for OE only? It does not seem to work.

By the way, it took about three seconds to find this article in the MS
Knowledgebase. You should try it sometime.
 
I would rather have support for Outlook 2002. I am using OE for this
newsgroup, but it crashes a lot when I lock the computer (which sends me
back to the welcome screen). I never see the link mentioned. It must be
for mail only, not news. I run OE with the /outnews flag.
