Mail sent, but not moved to Sent Items folder

I'm using Outlook 2000 on a WinXP system. It recently started sending mail from the Outbox, but leaving the mail there. Not moving it to the Sent Items folder. My husband and I have spent hours searching for the problem, deleted and reloaded Outlook, etc., but no luck. We have verified that the mail is sent. Any ideas or suggestions on what we should do or be looking for? Anyone else experience this? Thank you.

This solved our problem! Thank you SOOOO much! Can't tell
you how much grief and hours we've spent on this problem,
and your solutions were so easy. Yes, my Sent Items
folder was at 16,383.

I'd send you a big bunch of roses if I could.
