Mail notification is going off, but no new mail?

Hey in OE6 I often get the mail notification and when i
go to check my new mail there is none. It also often
says it has recieved more messages than are showing up.
For example I will see 3 new emails, but in the lower
right corner it will claim that it just downloaded 6 new
messages. Is this just a goofy glitch? I am just
worried that Im not recieving some of my mail.
