"Mail notification" envelope not disappearing when rules are applied

My apologies if this has been asked before -- I can't
search these posts and google gave me nothing. I have
rules marking messages as read and moving them to other
folders. Unfortunately, when these rules are applied,
the "mail notification" envelope in the system tray does
not disappear (double clicking it brings me to the inbox,
which is empty of offending messages). Is there a
workaround?

Sorry Roady, I wasn't clear -- does this fix work in
Outlook 2003? I'm having zero luck in Outlook 2003/WinXP
Professional. The code inserts fine and the rule sets up
no worries, but it just doesn't do anything...

That could be possible. I haven't tested it myself yet. Not long ago a
plug-in that does the same has been updated but still doesn't support
Outlook 2003 so it could be the same with the script. For more info on the
plug-in; http://www.techhit.com/autoread/

Morning Roady -- found that plug-in last night. They
said they plan to start testing it "within three months"
but it actually works (I have to set up the rule, then
reboot the computer before it starts to work, but that's
liveable). Thanks for your time, it's very nice of you
to help out like this.

You're welcome! Good to hear it works! :-)
