If I have an open document and then open another document I get the Mail Merge panel up, starting at step 3.......
If I then close it and switch to the first document it reopens - arrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh
Any ideas how I can stop this appearing please?

What version of Word?

See if your problem is overcome with the fix in the article “Why is my
"Blank Document" not blank?†at:

Word is version: 2002 (10.6612.6626) SP3

I've tried recreating the NORMAL.DOT but this made no difference.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TWFyaw==?=,

This sounds to me as if a macro may be executing...

First, make sure your macro security is set to "Medium" so that Word will prompt you if you try to open a document
containing macros. Now close Word. Hold down CTRL and double-click your Word icon; this will start Word in "Safe"
mode, so that no Addins will load.

Does the problem go away? Or when you open the document that causes the behavior, do you get a prompt about macros?
