mail icon on start menu

I used to have a mail (letter) icon on the bottom of the computer when I min.
outlook, when you see the mail icon their you know that you have recieved
mail. its not their now. how do I get it back?

What version of Outlook? What version of Windows?

Assuming your runnning on Outlook XP...

Tools, Options, (Pref tab selected)e-mail options, Advanced e-mail
options, select the box 'show envelope in sys tray'

OK, then. now we have enough information to suggest a potential fix.

Right-click the task bar and choose Properties. Click Customize. Locate
the "You have new unopened items" icon and click the behavior at the right,
choosing "Always show" from the drop down. Click OK, then OK.
