Using Word 2003. Any macros I write disappear when my
computer is turned off. They work fine until that time. It
doesn't matter whether they're attached to keys or to a
toolbar. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any help.
There are a couple of possibilities:
- You aren't saving the template they're stored in. If you don't specify
another template, macros are stored in Normal.dot. If you have the
appropriate option checked in Tools > Options > Save, Word will prompt you
to save Normal.dot when you shut down -- if you say No, the macros won't be
saved.
- You think you're saving Normal.dot, but you really aren't -- possibly
because the file is marked read-only. Find the file in Windows Explorer (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm), right-click and select
Properties, and uncheck "Read only" if it's checked.
- You are saving Normal.dot, but a network login script is causing it to be
overwritten by a copy from a server. This is a nasty high-handed tactic used
by some network administrators. If it's being used on you, complain.
- Your Normal.dot is corrupted, and doesn't store macros when saved. I've
never heard of a corruption that specific in its effects, but anything is
possible. Try renaming Normal.dot to something else and restarting Word (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm). See if you can
save macros in the new Normal.dot that Word creates.
