Sounds like the hard drive crapped out.
Try putting the diagnostics disk in the a:
drive and booting. Then do a diagnostic
test on the c: drive.

I have had windows 2000 pro on my machine for over a year
now, and this is the 1st time it would not boot up. After
the memory check & then the information box it goes to a
little blinking light & stays there.
I really don't know what to do. Can anyone give me a
solution to this problem? thanks

Ok, sounds reasonable. Although I don't know what the
diagnostic disk is. Can I make one on another computer?
I belive I don't have one. thanks

The diagnostics disk is usually with all the
crap that comes with a new machine. It
has a boot sector on it and is usually specific
to the machine. If it is an old machine you
might be SOL. Try to contact the vendor
and see if they can send you one or you
can download it.

I dont think a failed HDD will give this indicator. If the
HDD was dead you would get a "Non System Disk" error
messaee generally.

Go into you BIOS (Hti DEL key at memory test) or use the
manufacturer method.
Make sure that the computer sees the CD , HDD, and Floppy
drive. Snoop around to find it but don't save changes. If
it is there then you probably have a corrupted drive.
Go back to the BIOS and change the PC to boot off the
Windows CD or the Recovary CD. Make sure to Format the
new drive upon installation. This will wipe your data but
at least you are up and running. If you have a second PC
and know a bit about hardware install the suspect in the
other machine as a slave to the primary drive and see if
you can view the volumes there.

After you are back up and running load a anti-virus
program. Best bet is you got a boot sector virus or
somthing that corrupted your PC.

Hi Linda,

One of the possibilities is that the system is not completing the POST
(Power On Self Test). You obviously have internet connectivity, so do this.
Visit www.bootdisk.com and download a simple Windows '98 boot disk. Create
the diskette and see if you can boot from it. If not, then you have a
hardware problem that is preventing the machine from POSTing and you need to
take it to a qualified technician.

If you CAN boot from the Win98 boot diskette, then maybe your Windows 2000
startup files are damaged. These can be repaired using FIXBOOT from the
Recovery Console.
