my gateway desktop unit is stopped from starting up since the upgrades of the
week of Oct 12, 2009. Is this message due to the upgrade? How does one
correct the problem so that the computer can start?

Apparently yes (if the upgrades were the only changes since
the desktop started OK.)

1. System Restore (to a date before the upgrade)
2. Uninstal the upgrades.
