I need some advice, please!

I'm running XP home on an '01 Dell. It started running slow and looking a
little ill so I rebooted and the message above appeared.

I've tried the microsoft.com advice and I can't even log into safe mode or
boot to the last known good config.

I downloaded some lenghtly instructions for using the recovery CD to repair
5 corrupt config files and was stopped by the lack of the dreaded
Administrator Password (which I know I never assigned).

I tried reinstalling XP to correct the problem and I'm still getting the
same message.

Should I go for a clean XP install and start from scratch? I just need to
get in there and get some of my files off the HD. I have another newer PC
that I can use. Can I take the HD somewhere and have the files downloaded to
CDs or something?

Help me please!!!

For XP Home by default the password for the built in Administrator account
is blank so just hit enter when asked for it to enter the Recovery Console.
Note: you should assign a strong password to this account.

Here are some options for backing up your files.
1. Take the drive out of the computer and install it as a slave drive in
another Windows XP or 2000 computer. It should read the drive ok, so you can
copy the data. A variation of this is to put the drive in an external
drive enclosure and connect that to the other computer.

2. Create a bootable Bart's PE disk, boot from that, then copy the data to
external USB drive or flash drive.

3. Download a bootable Linux distro called Knoppix. Create a bootable CD
from that, boot from it, and copy the data to USB drive or flash drive, or
if the computer has two CD drives, one of which is a burner, then use the
k3b burning program on the Knoppix CD to burn the data to CD.

4. Take it to a competent computer tech to backup the data.

In the future always have a full and complete backup of important data so
you don't have to go through this again.

Thanks so much for responding, Rock. Are there instructions somewhere for
adding the drive as a slave? I've added a CD drive before but hard drives
scare me. Also, how can I tell whether my newer PC will accept a slave. The
Dell Manuel booklet talks about addind more memory and CD drives but nothing
about a slave. Once i hook it up can I just copy the files I need from the
slave to the existing HD? I just need a few files from the old one, nothing
too extensive.

PS I tried just hitting enter when it asked for the Administrator password
but it wanted one. I can't believe I assigned one back then. I was a a pretty
inexperienced user and would have avoided any tecky stuff!

The best thing to do would be to check on the Dell web site for info or
contact their tech support. Putting it in an external hard drive enclosure
avoids having to open the computer case to connect the drive.

Yes just copy from the drive as you would copy files in any situation.

Here is a utility that will reset the Administrator password to blank.
