lsass.exe continually writing to disk

XP/SP1 3 accounts (administrator and 2 users with admin
privs) Norton A/V and MS shows no sasser virus. On
internet via cable modem but even when firewall turns off
connection has same behavior: lsass is continually
writing to disk every few seconds forever. Is that the
way it's supposed to be?

I don't think so-just checked my task mgr-shows lsass at 00
winXP pro 667mz 512 ram sp1 updated
