i have a win xp pro laptop which was affected with the
stupid lsass worm.
initially my computer reboots every now and then
then it reboots every time i start my laptop, so much so
that i can't even get work as it restarts every 5 secs ---
all the time
then i try to reinstall my win xp pro again and this time
when installing the s/w, there is an error and
some "dumps" are made and the system reboots.
subsequently, i keep getting the error msg that there is
not enuf virutal memory or paging quota for me to complete
the operation.
since i cannot even boot up my pc, i use a ms-dos disk to
try to boot up.
Now shit! i can't find my c drive n even my cd-rom
what can i do??????? how can i get back my data????? how
can i even get pass to the desktop to do anything at all?
even when i try to load last best config oso did not work.
SOMEBODY pls HELP!!!

Hi - sounds like you've been infected by the Sasser worm. This means you
didn't apply Windows Updates (at least not very recently - patch for Sasser
exploits came out April 13) and don't have a firewall enabled....

For WinXP: If you can't stop your computer from restarting:

As soon as your computer reboots and Windows loads, click Start, then Run.
In the box, type the following:

shutdown -a (then click OK)

Then see http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.asp and
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-011.mspx

McAfee's Stinger tool to remove Sasser: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

MS removal tool for Windows 2000 SP2 and up, or Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;841720

Enable your XP firewall (or get a third party one if not on XP or even if
so - www.zonealarm.com has a free one) and run Windows Update regularly to
keep your OS patched to the gills. You also need good antivirus software and
need to keep it updated regularly. As mentioned, the patch for this exploit
was released April 13th...but there are plenty you do need. Perhaps want to
enable the autoupdate feature of Windows Update and subscribe to the
security bulletin announcements at www.microsoft.com/security.

ok....
but can anyone tell me how i can get past the booting?
cos evey time i start the laptop it says that there is not
enuf virtual memory and paging quota and the stupid laptop
just restart.
how can i boot it up in order to do anything????

Disconnect the cable from the computer, enable the firewall, reconnect the
cable.

After rereading the problem, I would suggest if your data is very important,
do not try anything else. Take it to a professional and cross your fingers
they can retrieve anything.

I know you missed the original, but you also missed Lanwench giving the same
advice as your supplied link. 8-) The best advice for a newbie is physically
disconnect from the internet connection. It has been my experience that most
computer users don't know how to get to RUN from the start button. They
would be disconnected long before they figured it out.

I hear you, Michael. :o) But if they learn, it will come in handy for the
next time......
