Reading these posts, I'm realizing my sytem has the
W32.Sasser worm, too, but I may've already messed it up.
When I began receiving the shut-down notice yesterday
morning, I recalled a remedy an IT friend recommended to
me months ago, when my system was doing the same thing
(with a different worm- seems my virus protection isn't
protecting a thing). It worked then, so I attempted it
this time around...but with NO success.

I shut off the System Restore, then searched for the
lsass.exe file. I deleted it and rebooted (intending to
turn on System Restore once more, then be done with it
all). My system rebooted fine, except now, all I get is a
black screen... the first few seconds of reboot are fine,
then nothing. I can see the mouse, but nothing more.

Is there a remedy? PLEASE say there's a remedy.

The "lsass.exe" is a critical Windows XP system file.
Why did you delte it?

Special note if you use AOL:

America Online installs its own connection settings that override
the ones that come with Windows XP. America Online's
connection settings don't include a way to turn on Windows XP's
built-in firewall.

a FREE firewall program for your computer.

Uuuugh...the last known good configuation? You mean the
last program that ran decently before I got the shutdown
notice?

(sorry for being so completely ignorant)
