Low on space, but files don't add up

I have a 5 gig partition. It says it's low on space with
4.66gig used. I go into that drive, and check all the file
sizes. All of the add up to barely over 2 gig. What's
eating up my drive space. I checked for page file as well,
but it was off initially. I turned it on to see if the
system could manage it better. Seems not. Thanks for any
help.

Do you have the folder options set to show all the hidden files and folders
and protected system files, by default these are hidden
Go into My Computer/Tools Menu/Folder Options/View

Check and uncheck the relevant boxes.

Unless you have turned off system restore, then by default 12% of your disk
space is reserved for this Control panel/system/system restore

If you have hibernation enabled, then you'll have a hiberfil.sys file equal
in size to the size of memory.

I should have asked if this is the partition with windows xp.

If you've had any past problems, I suppose disk blocks could get allocated
and not used, and remain flagged as in use, run chkdsk on the partition, and
then defragment it which will partially consolidate the free space into one
big chunk (although the builu in defragmenter isn;t great at this, if you go
to the executive website who wrote the built in defrag which is a cut doen
version of diskeeper , you can get a 30 day trial of the full version, which
is much, much better), you can schedule it to run automatically, and it will
defragment the windows xp partition at bootime, which means its can
defragment all the folders files and the master file table, which can't be
done while the system is up.
