loutlook express.black lines down the side of reply e-mails

Each time I reply to a e-mail and the person I writing to replies to me, a
vertical line appears down the LHS of the message. Up to six at the moment!
Question is, how do I stop the line appearing?
 
Stop using html formatted messages. Your mail settings will shift the
included text in a response to the right, and in html formatted messages
this will create a line. To change, click tools/options/send tab, change the
mail sending format.

OE Tools > Options > Send > Mail Sending Format > HTML > Indent messages on
reply (uncheck)

But if only one of you do it, you'll have a hard time keeping track of who
said what to whom.
