Lots Of Problems

Alright, I know there's going to be a million people to
just reinstall Windows, but I'm trying to avoid doing
that so that I don't lose all my registry settings and
what not. I've got 160 Gigs worth of registered programs
and the like, and I'm not looking forward to having to
reinstall them. That being said, here's the list of
problems.

It all started with Windows Media Player freezing
whenever I tried to switch between movie files in the
playlist. It made no difference what kind of movie it
was, the codec, or anything, WMP would just freeze and
I'd have to end process and restart. After restart I
could play another movie before I had to repeat the
process. I've got just about every codec you can imagine
installed and I can play the movie files without error.
I'm using WMP 9.

Next is the problem I'm currently having. I started up
the computer and Scandisk started running. It said it
found a bunch of invalid long folder names and what not,
and automatically deleted them all and truncated
(whatever that means) the rest of the files. Upon
entering Windows, I got no further then the welcome
screen. I pressed ctrl-alt-del to open task manager to
see what the problem was, and tried to manually run
explorer when I found out there was no explorer.exe,
msconfig.exe, or regedit.exe. Well, needless to say that
wasn't good.

First I tried reverting to last known good configuration
at the startup of WinXP, but that didn't work. So I
copied a explorer.exe file from another XP Pro computer,
which was fully upgraded with all patches, and it started
running fine again. I then thought to myself, maybe it
would help if I downloaded SP2. I did that, and the
problems compounded themselves. I can no longer right-
click on anything whatsoever without explorer crashing
with the ever-popular hungapp mod name. Also, I cannot
copy, paste, or delete anything on the computer.
Accessing programs is just fine, and opening programs is
fine. Drwatson crashes on a regular basis when trying to
perform normal tasks like right-clicking as well.

I'm running Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro with the latest
updates and have had no problems at all with viruses.
Also, no adware is on my computer either.

I'm sorry that this post is so long, but there are just
so many problems that I couldn't figure out what to do
anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you so much.

Your hard drive may have a problem. Sounds like some system files (ie.
explorer.exe) were damaged.

I would find a good hard drive diagnostic program and run it and see what it
comes up with. Also, if you can, back up all your important files.

I agree with the other posters, suspect a hardware problem. But my 1st
suspicion would be memory, not the hard drive. Get a good memory test
program (Memtest86) and check your memory.
