Lost the default "From"

Using 11.6359.6408 SP1 OL with Word 2003 as editor.

During recent major system changes, I've managed to lose the default "From"
for emails. The "From" line is blank. I only use a single identity and
attempts to enter my name manually brings up similar names from my contact
list.

Obviously, that is potentially quite dangerous!

Where, please, is the real me lurking? I can't find anything in help.

TIA

You will have to customize your view. If you're only using one profile, do
you really need the From field in that case?

If you have multiple e-mail accounts, you should be using the Accounts
dropdown on the toolbar in a mail message to select the sending account, not
the From field...

Thanks, but I don't have multiple email accounts.

Originally, the field was auto completed with my sole identity.

Now, when I enter the first letters it offers me all the "pat"s from my
contact list. That is pretty dangerous. A moments inattention and I'm likely
to send a message under a "false" name.

Click View and uncheck From Field. You'll never worry about it again.

As Brian said, you don't need the From field at all. If you only have one
e-mail account configured, your e-mail will always go out through that
account -- no need to spell out your name or e-mail address anywhere but the
e-mail account properties.

Thanks both.

A deceptively simple solution for a decidedly simple man.

It's probably not very well documented. Though the Outlook help does
instruct the user to use the Accounts dropdown, it probably doesn't advise
NOT to use the From field, and people who switch to Outlook from other
programs where the From field IS used to choose between accounts are bound to
be confused.
