Lost system restore points, Windows explorer opening at startup.

Got a new Dell 8300 with XP Prof, Office 2003 basic etc. Loaded some Epson
drivers, Flightsim 2002 and Acrobat. Now Windows explorer opens into
C:\windows\system32 on every boot/login. Tried anti-virus and spysweper, all
seems OK. Tried selective disables of startup items in MSCONFIG, can't find
the culprit.

Went to System Restore, all my restore points before today have gone.

Anyone know what's going on here?

Thanks,

Steve.

Windows explorer opens on every login. Where are the login items (as opposed
to startup items?) Or are these only the startup in the start menu?

(& thanks, Microsoft, for such clear and unambigous nomenclature).

Meanwhile, the lost restore points are still a mystery.

The Restore Points are gone for good once they are gone.
Excessive disk activity such as installing large applications like
FS2002 can cause it.

Of course, a failed large installation is just when one needs it. System
Resore is a safety belt that unclasps in the event of a serious accident.

Thanks, but I didn't try this. Just uninstalled everything I had put on the
machine, deleted the account and created a new one. Starting from scratch
again, and this WAS a new machine. Is there any way I can clean up the
registry detritus from all this messing around?

Steve.
