My link to 'System" in the Control panel is "lost." I can still get
to it via system.cpl but that's not at all convenient. Any idea(s)
on how to restore the link to its proper place? Thanks in advance.

I don't know a way to restore the icon to the control panel, but you could
always use windows key + pause (or pause/break) to bring up the system
properties window.

From Kelly Theriot's site. XP from A-Z and under C at the bottom of the page

Control Panel - Icons Missing

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load

Look in the right pane and you'll see the Control Panel Icons that have been disabled. You can either right click on the "don't load" subkey and select Delete to restore all disabled icons, or you can right click on each of the items in the right pane and select Delete to selectively restore them. Scroll up to Control Panel Applets for a listing of what each one is.

The change will be seen the next time you open Control Panel
