Lost some files after re-installing Windows XP. Can I retrieve th

Hi all;

After backing up waht I thought were all my files onto a DVD, I reinstalled
Windows XP on my computer. I have since realized that I did not back up a
folder which was on the desktop of a second user on the computer, (my son).
These were .jpg files. Pictures.

My question is, is it possible to retrieve those files or are they gone for
good?

Since the re-installation process had probably re-formatted
the hard drive as well as re-writing the desktop folders, these
files are essentially lost and are also probably unrecoverable
at this late stage. Backups should be made on a routine basis
and the hard drive layout (i.e., partitions and folders, etc.)
should be designed with this idea in mind.
