One of my colleagues archived all his files prior to an upgrade to a new
machine. On seeking to restore from archive, a password is requested. As
he never had one in the first place, he is stuffed.

Could there be a default he should try or another solution?

Hi Alan,

Chances are the backed up .PST file is corrupt if it is prompting your colleague for a password. Have him try copying the file again from the old machine if this information is still available.

Unfortunately, he now tells me the first drive was reformatted.
Is there no way of recovering the data?
