Lost Outlook Express inbox when upgraded with XP Home

When upgrading from Win 98 to XP Home, opened Outlook
Express 6 to find all previous mail in all folders
(Inbox, Sent) no longer there. Phoned ISP who said they
had been overwritten in the upgrade. Is this right or can
I retrieve mail???
