lost 'news' menu item

I was trying to install the 'news' opton on Win XP and somehow that item has totally vanished. It was present, I tried to follow the directions for putting it on the menu bar but screwed up, so I deleted it from the menu where I had placed it and not it's gone totally. I tried reinstalling Office 2003, I tried removing Outlook and reinstalling..... the 'news' item never reappears under the 'go' command list for changing menus. Short of formatting my hard drive and reinstalling, what can I do to get it back so I can actually use newsgroups?

I had this exact same problem.

What I found was that in Internet Explorer one of the options was not set
properly.

If you go to Tools->Internet Options and then select the "Programs" tab you
will see an option for newsgroups. If your problem is the same as mine then
this will be blank.

Simply drop down this box and select Outlook Express. Now when you try to
run the News item from your Outlook 2003 menu it will ask if you want to use
Outlook as your default program for newsgroups. You *MUST* say no here, or
the settings will go blank again in IE Options.

After doing this you may need to replace your News item in the Go menu, as
it still won't be there.

The following is a section from Outlook 2003 help which explains how to put
this item back into the Go menu.

The first time you use the newsreader, you must add the News command
to the Go menu.

1.. Add the News command to the Go menu.
How?

1.. On the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and
options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click
Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.), click the
Toolbar Options arrow .
2.. Point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then click Customize.
3.. Click the Commands tab.
4.. In the Categories list, click Go.
5.. In the Commands list, click News, and drag it, without
releasing the mouse, until it rests over the Go menu. When the menu displays
a list of commands, point to where you want the command to appear, and then
release the mouse.
2.. Click the Go menu, and then click News.
