lost network

We had a power outage last week and since then have been unable to access our
local network through a router. Both of us can access the internet through
the router.

One computer (this one) is XP, the other 2000. It seems to be the 2000 that
is having the trouble. The XP can see the presence of the 2000 but can't
access it. The 2000 computer sees only itself and not the XP. The 2000 cannot
get to the printers, one of which is hard-wired to the XP and one of which
goes directly into the router. The XP can access both printers.

We have checked our IP addresses and made sure our Zone Alarm settings
include each other's address in the trusted zone. We've checked for
file-sharing and it all seems to be set correctly.

I have restarted the broadband modem and the router and checked settings,
which seem fine.

I have run the XP network setup several times, which is all it used to take
if we had problems. But now nothing seems to work. I can't seem to make a
network CD like they imply can be used on other computers, because when I try
to it doesn't give me a choice of my CD drive but only of a flash drive. On
the 2000 computer, the network setup questions seem meaningless and are
oriented only toward connecting directly to the internet, as far as I can
tell.

I'm completely stumped now.

Kathy,

Your scenario comes up here pretty frequently. One of the most common causes of
this problem (but not the only) would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewall, or other security component.

Check your NetBT setting, and make sure that it's consistent on all computers.

Then look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):
