Lost Network and Internet Access

A few days ago, when I booted up my desktop PC I discovered that I had lost
the ability to connect to the Internet and also had lost all networking
capabilities. My network icons did not show up in the task bar and there
were no network connections in the Network Connections window. The day
before everything was OK.

I tried the IPCONFIG command and got the following message:"The application
or DLL C:\Windows\system32\DHCPCSVC.DLL is not a valid Windows image. Please
check this against your installation diskette." I could ping 127.0.0.1, but
nothing else.

I tried to open the Windows Firewall window and received the following
message: "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the
associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing Service?" I answered YES and the rply
was: "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
Service."

From the Services window the DHCP Client Service shows STOPPED and I can't
start it. "IPSEC Services - can't start."

I tried to retore to a previous checkpoint, but that didn't seem to do any
good. How far back should I go in a restore?

What can I do to regain my networking services? I am using cable modem for
my internet access along with a Linksys wireless router for laptop Internet
access and sharing to the desktop PC. I had considered restoring Windows
from a ghost image of the hard drive I made a few months ago, but was not
sure if that was the best solution.

Does anyone know what could have happened? Is this the result of a virus?
Is this a recoverable problem, or is a complete reinstall of the hard drive
neccessary?

Gordon,

to a point in time when everything still worked.

If the error messages say the truth, then it looks as if Windows
got damaged, or at least one DLL in it. You can use SFC, the
System File Checker, to try to repair that, or you can do a
repair installation (go to http://winhlp.com/ and search for
repair installation to get more information).
