I know sometime old habits are hard to get over. I used to save a shortcut
to winfile.exe but the icon disappeared and when I try and run it I get and
error saying commctrl.dll... is not present even though I have downloaded it
into my system folder? what the heck happened and what am I doing wrong. I
loved the old file manager on certain applications. Thanks in advance for
any fixes.

Windows XP does not have "winfile.exe".
Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
and scroll down to Item #71 (right column) and download
WinFile.Exe .
