Lost my External Hard Drive, then my USB's??????? HELP!!

Hello Everyone,
Hopefully someone can help me. I'm pretty new to computers so please nice. I
have an Acer Aspire 1310 with XP Home. I have a 120G external hard drive, now
for some reason I unplugged it yesterday from the cable going into it!! (i've
never done that before!!) and today it wont work. It lights up and the fan
runs but the pc can't find it. So i checked the cable, its fine, I checked
the usb's they (WERE) fine and then I went into Device manager and no
External to be seen. I though about updating the usb's (dont ask me why) and
it just said it can't update it any more then it is. Now since that I've done
nothing. My girlfriend was on the net for about 2-3 hours and then she
checked the usb by swapping the mouse with the Ext HDD and then it said "USB
not recognised and not working"or something like that and so she swapped them
back and it said it again!! SO now I've got NO Ext HDD and NO USB's working
at all. I did a system restore and it hasn't helped. PLEASE Someone Help I'm
really knackered with out all of then working!!!!

I assume your external hard drive came with a cd with
install, that has the drivers for the external drive. I
would disconnect the external drive. Reload the drivers
(from cd) then shutdown, then plug in your external
hardrive and reboot. At reboot , maybe plug and play will
work and recognize the drive.
