With limited networking knowledge and only 1/2 as much common sense, I
configured my personal home network (which consists of a desktop PC, wireless
laptop, network printer, DSL modem/router, etc) successfully after my second
attempt. However, after installing an additional hard drive in the desktop,
something somewhere went funny....:o{

While attempting to drop & drag certain files into the new hard drive from
the current one, files and settings from my laptop were "pulled into" my PC.
Not noticing the error of my ways immediately, I continued on with what I
thought was progress....

I have multiple copies of My Documents in several areas (PC-2HDD's, Laptop,
and CD Backup). However, once the "laptop" settings took over the PC, I
can't find some documents, I had to reconfigure some settings and the
so-called optional network components, MMC and various other unknown
applications have decimated what once was a superior machine (whose only
quirk was having me for its owner) into a black hole of missing information.
I found only shortcuts (in My Recent Documents) for my files....are they
retrievable from the pagefile.sys or other MS-Dos command? I had moved all
documents and settings to one hard drive (temporarily) in order to install
newer, bigger, faster drive and have since replaced my only set of current
docs and settings with older versions from the laptop system volume
information that was retrieved via the network places, show UPnP and other
"optional" crud that I just couldn't help but to explore.

I don’t know whether or not to perform a System Restore – and even if I did,
would it not bring back my stuff? Also, is there a system file or command in
DOS that would somehow wave its magic wand and make my files (some dating
back ten years or more) simply “reappear???â€

In addition, I had used Nero Backitup to copy C: files onto CD, but now that
the program files were missing, I had to download a newer (v. 7) version from
their website - and quite frankly...I AM AFRAID TO DO A THING WITH IT!

Any help, whether it be assistance, reference, psychological counseling or
referral would be kindly rewarded with a nice, fresh, crisp copy of my
beautiful excel spreadsheets, custom forms or professional resume...

Thank you for any input you may have that may resolve this issue. It is
most graciously appreciated.

When you say you copied C: files to backup, which files do you mean? All of
the C:drive, or just data files (documents, spreadsheets etc)? I suspect
that a restore from your backup will be the way to go.

Have you tried to use the Search command to find your files? Start -
Search?
