Hi,

I have a 70Gb hd in an IBM laptop. WinXP Pro. OS was preinstalled at
delivery.
WinXP now reports that I have used all 70Gb, but when I select all files on
the disk, property reports the total amount to be 24Gb. I have set explorer
to view hidden and system files. So I have lost about 50Gb ???

Please help !!!

Using Microsoft Explorer, click on your hard drive's letters
(i.e., "C" and "D" drives) and select Properties. This will open a
fairly reliable pie chart map of your partition's used space
and free space. The display also shows used/free space in
total bytes and gigabytes. This should give you a head start
on researching your problems.

Hi

From a command prompt in the root folder, type the following:

dir /a/s

What do the two lines at the end report?

You haven't "lost" anything but you have filled up your disk
without being aware of what you stored. These products
will tell you what's eating your disk space:

DriveUse:
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/freeware/index.html
Bullet Proof Folder sizes: http://www.foldersizes.com/

When I click on the hard drive property for c:, the pie chart map tells me
the total amount of disk space is 70Gb, and used space is 69Gb. I have also
tried dir /a/s and the two lines reports 23,3 Gb used and 1,7 Gb free. This
is tha same as when I select all files and maps in explorer and click on
property.

I really dont understand this. I have also tried updating bios, but no
change.

Hi

Use this command:

dir /a/s >files.txt

That will create a text file - open that in Notepad/Wordpad and see if there
are any very large files that you are not certain of.

You`ve probably got your `System Restore` set to Max. Switch off SR, and
adjust the amount down to a smaller figure then, restart SR. How you ask ?.
Start\Help and type in system restore.
