Lost my ability to Hibernate automatically.
It always starts immediately when mouse clicking the START button again.

hibernate here sometimes, usually with my left bird finger had focus
pressing the d , although lately a few times I've noticed my right ring
finger is either quicker or heavier on l

Humm, appears that problem is contagious! :-)

Verbosity was never my strong suit on a public forum, as seems to be with
others here, to the detriment of others reading postings. If you can't
understand the situation, then don't say anything, please.

I understand that Hibernating can be accessed through WindowsXP power
management, right clicking through the backgound (desktop) properites,
followed by left selecting>screen saver>power option, where a tab for
Hibernation is available. These have been manipulated to no avail.

There is another Hibernation initiation process through BIOS which I don't
seem to see on my machine (Shop built, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00Ghz X86-based
PC), Intel SMBIOS v2.3.

The response by the computer to the WindowsXP process:

START>SHUT DOWN>(holding sown shift key to change 'Standby' to 'Hibernate')
selecting 'Hibernate', results in a hung operation. The computer seems to
respond immediately to the hibernation when left mouse clicking the START
button again.

Ok. For hibernation to work you MUST have sufficient freespace on the
boot drive to write out the contents of memory. If you had it working at
one time but now it stopped, did you add more memory? Then the
hiberfil.sys needs more room. Does hiberfil.sys exist in the root of
"c:"? (hidden system file) If so it should equal the size of the
installed memory. Harddrive cleanup and defraging may be also required
to get this working again.

Drive C: has 66.9GB of free space
hyberfile.sys is 494MB
Defrag using a DOS prompt in safe mode done once in a while.

'My Computer' shows 496MB RAM no changes in hardware.
Registry is not perfectly clean as I only use freeware programs that I
trust. Others want to remove too much. I did manually remove all TMP & TEMP
files a long time ago, which may have been the improper thing to do.

Sometimes it will start up working late, when interrupted by a Sygate 5.6
PFS firewall task shown as stopping access for
C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe for
GUICONFIG#SRULE@NBBLOCK#BLOCK-UDP or for -TCP

Are you saying that you have been running registry cleaners on this box?
I never trust them to NOT remove something that might come back and bite
me later. Try turning OFF hibernate in Power Options. And delete
hiberfil.sys. Do a CHKDSK /F and then defrag the drive. After that
re-enable Hibernation in Power Options and see if things are working again.

Your solution works fine. Thanks a lot for hanging in there !!

When i re-booted after Power Options>Hibernate dis-allowed,
the hiberfil.sys in C: root was gone. Both CHKDSK and SCANDISK require a
system re-boot before each begins.

Glad to hear it's all working again. Have an enjoyable day.

PS. "SCANDISK" is not part of Windows XP only CHKDSK is. Is this a
"upgrade" from "98" or "ME"?

Don't know if it is SCANDISK or CHKDSK
Access is through icon 'My Computer' performance error checking done on next
re-boot.
WinXP Home OS is stand-alone purchased version, with Microsoft's SP-2 disk
added.

First I'm trying to find this file - hiberfil.sys. No luck so far.
But, his sounds like what happened to me. I added more memory (2gig up fro
512) then noticed both standby and hibernate not working. How do I find out
hpw much roo it now has and how do I make it bigger to equal the size of the
memory?
If I can't find this file, what should I do?

I found the system file and it is the same size as my memory which is 2 gig.
Still, I'm running the disk cleanup as suggested and the chkdsk will run as
soon as I reboot. I also disabled hibernate and standby. Hopefully it will
work.
