I appear to be missing some of my hard drive! I have an 80GB hard drive which is currently showing as only 7% free. This happened in the blink of an eye and its not becuse I've used that much space. Have tried a system restore which hasn't helped and also the clean disk options but I'm still left with 7%. Can't even run disk defragment as it needs at least 15% to run - anyone any ideas

As the PC is in use it will store restore points (one of which you have used
recently) as part of the disk cleanup you can use more options to remove all
but the last restore point. These can amount to 100Megs so try using that
option and see if you get enough space released to allow defrag to run.
You may have to search through your drive to see if any large files have
been left behind if you still think you should have more space free, use
tools>folder options>view to make sure you are viewing hidden files.

hope that helps

Open a Command Prompt (= DOS) window and then enter the following
command:

CHKDSK C:

If that confirms the capacity of your drive and the relatively small
amount of free space remaining then try searching the drive for very
large files.

Use Start - Search - All Files and Folders - What size is it? -
Specify size - at least - 50000 kb.

That will provide a list of the names and locations of any really huge
files on your hard drive, of which there should be relatively few - my
system lists only a dozen or so and they are legitimate. If
something has used up a lot of space on your drive then this should
find it.

Post the results of the file search back here if you need additional
advice or assistance.

Good luck

I am having the same problem as angie, however there appears to be a file on my computer which contains about 7 gigs of data and I have no access to it, I cannot even delete the file! My hard drive is down to 6% free space I have done a search for files over 50000 kb and have found nothing out of the ordinary. Have you any further suggestions?
Thanks.

Simon.
