Hi,

I need help!

I was trying to burn a CD but it failed and my PC crashed. I restarted the
PC and got some sort of scandisk/checkdisk utility which ran and found a
number of bad clusters which it said that it had fixed. Unfortunately, the
folder where I was trying to burn the files from has suddenly become empty
even though my HDD still shows the 17GB that seems lost. Is there any way of
recovering these files or are they lost for good? If I need software to help
solve this please supply me with any info.

Help!

Thanks

Alex.

Hi,

May not be good. I would boot the system from the WinXP CD and load the
Recovery Console, then run "chkdsk C: /r" (or on whatever drive letter
contained the files).

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]

To try and retrieve your deleted files, you would want to use an undelete
utility. These are commonly available for free, and work on the premise that
the space the file formerly occupied has not been overwritten with new data
yet. Once that has occured, recovery requires more extensive (and expensive)
work with dedicated forensic tools by someone who knows what they are doing.

This one here works quite well for basic file recovery:
