lost files

somehow i have lost some windows files.........i think?i cannot now use
system restore,help and update and windows file search.in safe mode all i get
is a blank screen for restore and search.on normal i get the hour glass
figure which flicks on and off twice,then nothing.i do not have a windows xp
disc as my xp was installed at the factory.please could anyone help me as
this is getting rather annoying.

From Start>Run type

sfc /scannow

You will need to have your XP CD to hand.
