I was trying to install the second hard on my computer. After few attempt
(the 2nd hard had hardware problem) I gave up and rebooted my system. Then I
found out that most of my files have lost their contents. The files are
there, but their size are 0.
For the same reason it cannot show desktop image, run some of applications
(giving error message " The application or DLL ... is not a valid window
image".

Can this be the effect of a malicious virus or is it a Windows XP (home
edition) glitch?

Hi everybody,

I forgot to add that my Anti-virus(Norton) was expired.
I tried AVG anti-virus and it detected a virus (SysDref) and few threats,
which it took care of. This SysDref pop-ups started to appear few days
before the problem. But I guess the damage is done. Lots of files in
different folders have lost their contents.

Please if you know how to recover them, please let me know as the files
are very important for me and unfortunately I don't have a back up.

Thanks,
Nathan

You can try some data recovery software, but I don't think that will help.
Seems like the virus deleted the contents of the files. You can restore the
files from a recent backup or take this as a hard lesson to not let your
security programs lapse, practice safe hex and always have a full and
complete backup.
