lost everything on my desktop including my start/task bar

my son was fiddling on the computer and downloaded stuff. i ran a virus scan
and found 11 things so i quarentined them and deleted them. then i also went
into my control panel and deleted stuff that i thought he installed. then
macaffe said to restart the computer. when i did i lost all my desk top icons
along with my task bar with the start key on it.

help how do i get them back.
the only way i can get online is to hit control/alt/delete. then the windows
task manager comes up. i then hit file , new task (run) and type in msn to
get it to open up.

help me please and keep it simply as i am computer challanged. lol

i was thinking of reinstalling the windows xp will that help.
if you can please email me directly at (e-mail address removed) with suggestion.
please put in the subject computer help so it wont go to my junk box.

Not sure this will be anything but a work around, but try typing
"explorer.exe" at New Task > Run.

I would try a System Restore - from Task Manager, run the following:

c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Choose 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' then follow the wizard.
Pick a date before your son was 'fiddling' with it and you should be
good to go.
