I recently took a computer which was on my domain and
joined it to a workgroup. once the machine was established
on the workgroup I went to go back into my local machine
account (Password was the same)and the desktop was not
retained and all internet mail account settings were lost
along with all the mail.

Does anyone know why this happened or even better how to
recover the lost mail.

Thanks

When going from domain to workgroup, your username changed internally. Yes,
it's the same at the login dialogue, but as far as the machine is concerned,
it's now Machinename\User instead of Domainname\User. In
C:\Documents and Settings, you now have {olduser} and {newuser} folders,
like
C:\Documents and Settings\Jones and C:\Documents and Settings\Jones.Machine
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Jones.000. Your mail data is located in the old
folder tree. If you log in as user Administrator, you can copy the old
folder tree to the new folder tree and get back all your data, including
Destop settings, Email, shortcuts, and so on.
