Last night I upgraded to Windows XP. I have just discovered that I have
lost all my "drafts" in Outlook Express. I post on a newsgroup called
alt.christnet.christianliving and use the drafted posts sort of e a
documents folder. I thought this material had a .pst ending, did a
search but came up with nothing.

Once this happened to me before out of the blue and I could find those
files with the freebie program PC Inspector File Recovery, but the lost
file it's creating AFTER Windows XP is HUGE. It is now running and has
a 80 minute timeframe in which to download everything "lost."

Can anybody help me?

I have yet another problem. I can't use Zone Alarm. Even with
Internet Explorer passing the lock, if Zone Alarm is active it seems to
block everything. Can anybody enlighten me on why Zone Alarm is
working so strangely?

I have other XP problems, but for now if those 2 can be fixed, I'll be
relatively happy.

Gerry,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have an added problem. THAT .dbx extention ALSO coinicides with
AutoCAD extentions. I found the files and the titles of the files are
correct but they have been given the AutoCad symbol and OE can't import
them. Btw, I design house plans for a living from my home... lol What
a revolting development! At least there's hope. There's got to be
100s of hours worth of work in those files.

Can you tell me how to somehow temporarily disconnect the connection
between these file types and AutoCad file types?

Thanks again,

Jude

Gerry,

I just wanted to tell you ALL IS WELL! lol ... well where it concerns
my OE drafts 'cause I finally got all my work back. However, I have
other XP problems which I will post seperately. Your advice was surely
the key to getting back my material. I did everything within the
instructions that you linked me to plus a little tweak and I got them
ALL back. I'm feeling pretty good right about now and if I could click
my heels I would! lol I DO appreciate what you do helping us end
users.

What happens if you right click on a file does it give you the option to
"Open with" Outlook Express?

How to change file associations in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307859

Advice found in Google:

One application will be the default - this application will open with
the
file when the file is double-clicked. As many other applications as you
want can also be associated with the file type. These non-default
applications will be listed as options when you right-click on the file.
Typically, the default application will have an action associated with
the
file type of "Open", while others might have actions like "View",
"Edit",
"Look at", whatever.

To see how it's done, in an Explorer window do View / Folder Options /
File
Types. Select a file type and choose Edit. Note the actions. Repeat
with
different file types until you find one that has multiple actions. Note
that
one action (probably "Open") is the default. Find a file of this type,
right click it, and you'll see how the other actions are listed as
options.

This is an irritant. I encounter the problem with pdf files.

But have you cut a disk for backup yet? Something else may go any
second. It's not a matter of IF the computer is going to fail, it's
WHEN!

Okay, Gerry. Are you talking about backing up my information on zip or
are you talking about making a backup on my harddrive?

I'm not very informed about this. I did install a zip drive but it's
been awhile since I've backed up my personal information.

Just tell me what I need to do and I'll do it.

Thanks.
